Description:
|
Le Gros's relief was inspired by the Ecstasy of St Catherine of Siena by Melchiore Caffa. This offered the ideal pattern for a meditative image, eminently suitable in the case of Gonzaga, the young Jesuit saint (1568-1591) who was often invoked as an example of youthful piety. He had died while still a student, during an epidemic where he cared for the victims. Saint Aloysius de Gonzaga was beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726. The surrounding altar which includes twisted columns in green marble is by Andrea Pozzo. (Source: Web Gallery of Art; http://www.wga.hu/index.html)
