Description:
|
The Villa Medici contains some of the collections of Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici as well as collections as part of the French Academy in Rome, including a Gipsoteca, a plaster-cast collection for study purposes. Athena of Velletri or Velletri Pallas is a type of classical marble statue of Athena, wearing a helmet. All statues of this type are 1st century Roman copies of a lost Greek bronze, possibly a bronze of ca. 430 BCE by Kresilas. Many ancient copies of the bronze have been found, but the most famous is the 3.05 m (10 ft) high example found in the ruins of a Roman villa in a vineyard near Velletri in 1797. This example is now in the Louvre. Bust length copies were made later. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
