Description:
|
The first stone of the façade was laid on 8 September 1296 to a design by Arnolfo di Cambio. Arnolfo managed to complete two bays and half of the new façade. His sculptures were removed to the Opera's Historical Museum in 1586 because Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici had ordered the construction of a new façade. The present museum opened in 1891.
