Description:
Such a landscape is rare in Degas' oeuvre. It was to artists of the Barbizon School and to the somewhat later forested landscapes of Gustave Courbet that Degas turned for inspiration in making this landscape of a secluded forest pool. Degas had seen the landscapes painted by Gustave Courbet along the banks of the Loue River in far eastern France in the 1850s and 1860s in exhibitions. The theme may also have been inspired by the 1867 staging of the ballet La Source, which featured an actual pond in the stage set. Degas did a painting of this stage set and rehearsal.
