Description:
Mary, holding Jesus in her arms, is seated on a throne, like a queen. This is the iconography that gives rise to the title “Maestà” or “Majesty”, used to refer to this and other paintings with similar subjects. Ognissanti is the name of the church in Florence for which the painting was created. The Virgin is holding the Child, who is giving a blessing with his right hand, while in his left, he holds a rolled scroll, symbolizing knowledge. Around the throne is a pointed tabernacle, inlaid with different-colored marble, evoking the Gothic architecture of the 1300s. (Source: Uffizi Gallery [museum website]; https://www.uffizi.i t/en/)
