Description:
|
A Roman copy of a celebrated archetype, a Hellenistic statue of the crouching Aphrodite (Venus) at her bath. There were several Greek models to choose from, perhaps the most famous was by the Bithynian sculptor Doidalsas (original bronze of the 3rd century BCE). The complicated pose, with arms crossing in the front is typical of the dynamic movement in the Hellenistic style. This statue has been heavily restored and the dolphin and attendant added.
