Work Notes:
The earliest plans for the fortified country residence were drawn up by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger before Cardinal Farnese's election to the papacy in 1534. Work on the building was probably also begun in the early 1530s in collaboration with Baldassare Peruzzi. Work was, however, ceased in the later 1530s and not resumed until 1556 when Pope Paul III commissioned the architect Vignola to complete the building. (Coffin, 1979, 281-285)
