REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head"], a vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body"]. The "kepala" of this sarong is decorated with the elongated triangle motif known as "tumpal". The patchwork pattern is known as "tambal" [see Elliott 1984:98 for a discussion of this pattern]. This sarong is still sewn into a loop the way it would have been worn. The tube-shaped sarong is considered a less formal garment than the flat "kain" worn in a wrap-around fashion [Raadt-Apell 1982:80]. According to the original accession information: From Lasem, on the North Coast of Central Java. Circa 1930. Field collected.
