Notes:
REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON THE BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: A "kain" is a length of cloth worn in Indonesia as a wrap-around skirt; once worn in Java by both sexes, in more recent times, primarily a woman's garment. Indigo dyed. Collected during the decade prior to World War II. The style is that of Central Java. One of the motifs represented is "parang", the sword motif [see Elliott 1984:69 for illustration]. According to Rachael Grossman (1975): "Garismiring" symbol with "parang" variation; probably from Jogjakarta because of the fineness, but possibly from Indramayu.
