REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head], a vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body]. The background of the "kepala" was never completed; an unfinished diagonal grid is marked out but was never waxed and dyed. This sarong is still sewn into a loop, as it would have been worn. The pattern and color are characteristic of batik from the town of Pekalongan on the North Coaat of Java. The rose motif demonstrates the influence of European floral design on the North Coast, where the batik industry was dominated in the pre-WWII period by Eurasian-managed workshops.
