Sheffield: pocket knife cutler at work in Washington works of the house of Wostholm, the leading cutlers of Britain's cutlery center. The company was founded in 1745 and Washington works was established in the early 1800's, the first real cutlery factory in the trade. Prior to this the cutlery factories were only warehouses where the workers brought their products which they fashioned in their homes. Altho [although] modern methods and the craftsman is most important still in the cutlery trade, one of the few British industries still using or needing these hand work to produce high-class merchandise.
