Public magazine - the colonial arsenal was completed in 1716 and was used to hold military stores and explosives until the last decade of the 18th century. The removal of the powder from this magazine in 1775 on the order of the royal governor, Lord Dunmore, precipitated the revolution in Virginia. In 1889, it was saved from almost certain loss by the association for the preservation of Virginia antiquities. The octagonal building is still owned by the association but was restored by colonial Williamsburg in 1935.
