Near Charleston: Cypress Gardens, part of the Dean Hall Plantation, considered in the antebellum days as a model plantation, was once the great cypress swamp of the plantation. Today, a mecca for tourists, the swamp has been dredged and filled to form a place for woodland and floral beauty. The knobby protrusions from the waters made dark by the tannic acid from the giant Cypresses are called "knees" and are the means of breathing for these trees.
