REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Kain" or large cloth worn as a sarong. "Songket" or supplementary weft with metallic thread technique. Includes the "tumpal" triangular border motif thought to have been originally inspired by Indian textiles. Would have been worn for special occasions by an aristocratic person or else used as theatrical or dance costume.
