REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Openwork "selendang" or sash worn as shoulder, breast or waist cloth. Gittinger [1979:145] mentions such open-work "selendang", calling the technique "ajoure" and stating that they are used in cremation ceremonies as well as for more mundane occasions. See Krause 1926:116 & 155 for photos of this type of cloth in use. Collected during the decade prior to World War II.
