Content/Description
Notes:
REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of three panels sewn together. Ties at the upper edge are for holding the garment together at the shoulder, an adaptation to the cool highland climate in the Ngada region. Purchased from a dealer in the town of Bajawa, capital of the Ngada District. The elephant motif is inspired by the elephants on "patola" trade cloths which were imported to Flores from India in the colonial period. The Ngada elephant has remained generally realistic in form, as oppesed to the elephant motif in Ende or Lio sarongs which have become highly stylized. See X88.1260 for an example of the Ende elephant and X88.1267 for an example of the Lio elephant.
