REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Consists of two panels sewn together warpwise. This cloth was probably once sewn together at the ends to form a tube sarong. The fringe has been left at one end but cut off on the other. Commercial (?) cotton thread. Probably natural dyes; Morinda citrifolia for red-brown and indigo for blue. Thread count: warp 60 e.p.i. (single, two-ply thread); weft 28 e.p.i. The original accession material for this cloth states that it is from Flores, but this may be in error. The particular motif configuration does not closely match any Florinese cloths illustrated in the literature. A somewhat similar motif is illustrated in Langewis & Wagner 1964:Plate 10, but on a cloth that is clearly in the Sikka style. However, X74.370 very closely matches illustrations of textiles from Kisar [Gittinger 1979:fig.151] and from Luang [Kahn Majlis 1984:fig.543]. An unusual feature of X74.370 is the fact that the fringe has been left on one end but removed on the other; the fringe is usually removed when a sarong is made from the loom length, but in some parts of the Lesser Sundas it is left to decorate the finished sarong.
