REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Consists of two panels sewn together warpwise. Handspun(?) cotton thread; some weft thread appears to be commercial thread. Probably natural dyes including Morinda citrifolia for red, overdyed with indigo for black. Thread count: warp 64 e.p.i.; weft 24 e.p.i. From the Ende region, centered around the town of Ende on the south coast of central Flores. Purchased by George Ellis in the Netherlands in 1969. This is not one of the most common Ende motifs; cloths with somewhat similar motifs are illustrated only in Kahn Majlis 1984:263, plates 375 & 376. The central panel motif appears to be strongly influenced by the "patola" motif of imported Gujerati trade textiles. For a general discussion of the distribution of Florinese textile styles, see Maxwell 1980:141-154.
