REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Batik showing a European inspired motif (steamship). See Elliott 1984:108 for illustration of similar motif. Chinese influenced floral style indicates origin on north coast of Java, perhaps from Pekalongan. Steamship motif probably done with a "cap" or stamp, but some of the detailing is "tulis" or hand drawn.
