Notes:
REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head], a vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body]. The following information is from the original accession material, presumably provided by Kent Watters: Very rare, unusual example of the popular "kain batik lippan" (centipede motif), often refered to as "seaweed" motif, which spanned a period of about 30 years and is now being produced again. This piece is special for its highly stylized, whimsical animals. Probably from Semarang, Java. Circa 1925. Aniline dyes.
