REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: An example of a well known style of cloth from Palembang, South Sumatra, decorated by both the weft ikat and the supplementary weft techniques on a red silk ground. The polychrome weft ikat center panel shows the influence of Indian trade cloths. The supplementary weft with metallic thread is a widespead technique in Indonesia known as "songket". Illustrations of similar cloths can be found in Kahn Majlis 1984:plates 110, 114 & 116. The size and shape of the cloth would suggest that it be considered a "kain" or cloth worn wrapped around the lower half of the body; however, examples in Kahn Majlis with similar dimensions are labeled "selendang", implying use as shoulder cloths.
