REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Square cloth with supplementary weft designs, believed to be from Lombok Island. Handspun cotton yarns with natural dyes. It has been attributed to Lampung, Sumatra, probably due to its similarity to "tampan" cloths. There is very little record of this style of cloth in the literature; one photograph appears in Kahn Majlis 1984:78. See Gittinger 1979:150-151 and Bolland 1971 for existing descriptions of Lombok textiles generally. This style of cloth has been marketed by dealers as offering cloths from the Sasak population of Lombok. A series of photographs of this style of cloth provided by Dominique Rabier makes the identification of the two FMCH cloths (X80.901 & X82.1219) unmistakable. The similar cloths in the photographs are identified as "osap" from Sembajun, Lombok.
