REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head"], a vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body"]. The "kepala" of this "sarong" is decorated with the elongated triangle motif known as "tumpal". For similar cloths, see X83.885 and X83.886 and also photo in Kahlenberg 1977:63-64.
