REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The term "sarong" used in this sense refers to a particular size and style of batik cloth [Elliott 1984:32]. The characteristic feature is the "kepala" [="head"], a vertical section with a motif which contrasts with the motif of the "badan" [="body"]. The floral style of this cloth is characteristic of batik from the North Coast of Java. From accompanying notes: Lasem, Java; circa 1900. From accompanying tag: Design name "buket bang bini"; age about 60 years. For similar cloth, see X83.889.
