REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Selendang" or shawl, with warp fringe. Fringe tied with palm leaf fiber strips. Homespun and commercial cotton thread. Commercial and natural(?) dyes, probably including Morinda citrifolia for red-brown. Thread count: warp 80 e.p.i.; weft 30 e.p.i. From the Lio domain in east central Flores, centered around the town of Wolowaru. The following information from Kent Watters (1978): Triangular design near ends is an "earring" motif [Lio earrings of this type are illustrated in Rodgers 1985:286]; similar shapes in border designs are "tumpal" designs; main design elements of piece are Portugese boats with people.
