REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Purchased new; field collected in the home of the owner, Sisilia Sa'o. This woman tied the ikat pattern herself, but contracted the actual weaving with another woman. The tying of the pattern is considered the more advanced skill and women skilled at tying frequently contract out the weaving to younger women. This cloth was identified by the owner as a "senai". "Senai" are single panel men's shoulder cloths of a relatively large size. Smaller shoulder cloths of scarf-like dimensions are referred to as "lete". The much larger two-panel cloths are called "semba". The motif of this cloth is "mata kopo". "Mata" is a general word meaning "pattern"; "kopo" means corral or sty. "Mata kopo" is a variant of a group of Ende motifs known as "rote", all of which involve a rope-like line joining the individual elements of the pattern. Although the population of Onelako is ethnically Lio, this cloth (as most other shoulder cloths and women's sarongs made in Ndona Subdistrict) is basically an Ende style.
