REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of two panels sewn together. Purchased in the market in Ende, Flores, from an Adonara woman who brought the cloth to Ende. Made of commercial yarn, which the seller referred to as "Dutch" yarn. See Barnes 1987:20-21 for a discussion of the distribution of ikat and non-ikat weaving on Adonara. Striped, non-ikat sarongs are associated with coastal Islamic settlements, which is in accord with the provenance of Waiwerang given by the seller. Waiwerang is the main commmercial center on Adonara, located on the south coast.
