A Correct Map of the United …
1817
Case Map
Authors Lewis, Samuel
Full Title A Correct Map of the United States, With The West Indies, from the best Authorities by Samuel Lewis 1817. 2nd Edition. Containing the Seat of War &c. Published by T.L. Plowman, Philadelphia, 1813. Entered ... 22nd Mar.
Note The U.S. portion of the map is identical to Maclure's 1809 base map. This map seems to have a long history. It first appears as the Maclure base in 1809 (indicating that it must have been published as a Political map at that time, but we can find no record of it), then it shows up in Amer. Phil. Soc. 563 as the same map but dated 1811, then a second copy in the same holding dated 1813 and having "2nd edition, Containing the Seat of War &c." - both copies by T.L. Plowman of Philadelphia. This is a portion of the map here - it has the same notations, including the 1813 date, but three sections have been added, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, the West Indies, Central America and part of South America. And it has a new title (as above) and is dated 1817 - the title is a paste on slip which presumably covers the earlier title - A Map of the United States of America (as on Maclure). Ristow and Karrow then list an 1820 edition of this same map. The title mentioning the Seat of War indicates that the map had use during the War of 1812. After Plowman's name is "entered according to act of Congress 22nd Mar." With outline color by state and cloth edging. Dissected into 24 sections and folding into half leather marbled paper covered boards 27x17 with ties.

Compiled from authorized explorations and other reliable data by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Top'l. Eng'rs. In the Office of Pacific R.R. Surveys, War Dept. under the direction of Bvt. Maj. W.H. Emory, Top'l. Eng'rs. in 1854. Capt. A.A. Humphreys, Top'l. Eng'rs. in 1854-58. Recompiled and redrawn under the direction of the Chief of Corps of Engineers By Edward Freyhold 1865-66-67-68. Head Quarters Corp Of Engineers, War Department. Engraved & printed by Julius Bien, N.Y. (inset) Territory Of Alaska Ceded By Russia To The United States 1868.
Note Alaska inset, 59 "authorities", Streeter copy. Wheat: "one of the great American maps, and one profoundly influential." The final revision of the original Warren map of 1857, largely redrawn, in substance, and style of hachuring. An earlier state of the same imprint is described in Streeter 3080. See Wheeler vol 1 reference. In 1879 Freyhold issued another larger version of this map (Wheat 1295) (see our copy). Without color. Dissected into 24 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new burgundy cloth folding case 30x22 with original spine label reading "Freyhold - Map Of Explorations For Pacific R.R. - Recompiled 1865-68."

Authors Warren, Gouverneur Kemble, 1830-1882, Freyhold, Edward
Full Title Map Of The Territory Of The United States From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean, Originally prepared to accompany the Reports of the Explorations For A Pacific Railroad Route ... Compiled from authorized explorations and other reliable data by Lieut. G.K. Warren, Top'l. Eng'rs. In the Office of Pacific R.R. Surveys, War Dept. under the direction of Bvt. Maj. W.H. Emory, Top'l. Eng'rs. in 1854. Capt. A.A. Humphreys, Top'l. Eng'rs. in 1854-58. And partly recompiled and redrawn under the direction of the Engineer Bureau in 1865-66-67. Engineer Bureau, War Department. Engraved on stone by Julius Bien, New York.
Note Reissue, with new discoveries, of 1857 Warren "Map of the Territory of the United States..." Although Freyhold's name is not on the title, he clearly redrew this map from his earlier 1858 edition (where his name does appear on the title). This is earlier than the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions (Streeter 3080 and 3081), and should be distinguished from them in having the title still in the lower left corner (not in the lower center as in the 1868 Warren/Freyhold editions), and because it does not have the Alaska inset, has 47 authorities vs. 48, and is dated Aug 26, 1867 in Ms. next to the same inscription mentioned by Streeter on his later copy (Wm. E. Merrill, etc., which Streeter mistakes for E. Hamill). Mail routes in red ink (original?)(Streeter says they were dropped from the second 1868 ed.) plus many interesting Ms. additions of names of forts, and extension of pacific railroad. Cf. Wheat 1185. Wheat does not mention this edition and was not aware of it (see his "correction" of Wheeler's mention of the map in the note, p. 244). See a very informative article by Lewis Buttery on a slightly earlier state of this map (early 1867) found at West Point - "Warren Map of 1867." Outline color. Map is dissected into 24 sections, edged in blue silk, and folded into a new burgundy cloth folding case 30x22 with "Warren & Freyhold. Map of Exploratations (sic) for Pacific R.R. 1865-67" stamped in gilt.

Authors Gardner, James
Full Title Western Hemisphere. Eastern Hemisphere. Projected, Compiled And Drawn, By James Gardner. The Plan Work And Writing Engraved By John Froggett. The Hills By James Palmer. London, Published Sept. 1, 1825, by J. Gardner, Geographer (Agent For The Sale Of The Ordnance Surveys) No. 163 Regent Street. Dublin, Sold By Messrs. Allen & Co. Dame Street. Paris, Goujon, 6, Rue De Bac. Simmoneau, 6, Rue De La Paix. Berlin, S. Schropp & Co. Dresden, E. Arnold ...
Note With 48 inch spheres, this may be one of the largest World Maps produced in the early 1800's. Arrowsmith's Map of the World on a Globular Projection had 36 inch spheres and was last published in 1814. Gardner's map is fairly up to date in the American Northwest, less so in the plains area. He probably used Wyld's and Arrowsmith's maps of North America as sources. Not in Phillips or Wheat. British Museum World catalog lists this edition and an 1837 edition. The drawing and engraving of this map is very elegant and spare. In eight sheets, dissected into 6 sections each, and mounted on linen with dark green silk edging. Outline color. Folds into a new gray cloth folding case 36x23 with "Western And Eastern Hemispheres J. Gardner 1825" stamped in gold on the spine.

By W.R. Gardner. London: William Darton, 58 Holborn Hill, 10 Mo. 23rd, 1823. W.R. Gardner Sculpt. 367 Strand.
Note This may be the earliest chart to depict the heights of mountains and the lengths of rivers together in one illustration, with the rivers hanging down over the mountains. Wolter says that Bulla's Tableau Comparatif of 1826 is the earliest of the combined mountain and river type, but he had not seen this chart by Gardner done three years earlier and does not list it. This chart is beautifully done and, while not large in size, it is impressive in its scope. Full color. Map is mounted on linen, dissected into 8 sections with an end sheet label reading "The Most Approved Modern Maps, Plans, And Charts, Of every Description, From The Best Authorities, Constantly on Sale at William Darton's Map, Print, and Chart Warehouse, 58, Holborn Hill, London..." Map folds into a dark green marbled cardboard case with a turquoise paper label printed with the map title (as above), there is a "William Darton's, Map seller" bookplate label on the back of the case.

Full Title Map Of The United States, British & Central America. From State Documents and Unpublished Materials By Professor H.D. Rogers of Boston U.S. and A. Keith Johnston, F.R.S.E. Geographer To The Queen.
Note First edition. Very large map of North America with nine inset maps of important cities. This map contains and is the basis of all the maps that appear in the Rogers and Johnston Atlas of the United States of North America, published in the same year. It is a stunning map, very detailed in the west, Wheat did not see this map, but did comment on two of the western maps in the Atlas - "This map is...notable for its clarity, though it is equally notable for the amount of information it contains. W and A.K. Johnston, of Edinburgh, were engravers who well understood their art, and their maps are outstanding." The Proposed Pacific Railway routes are shown. This map compares favorably to the large Colton and Mitchell U.S. maps of the same date (which are also on the same scale) and generally it is more accurate. Scarce, with only the later 1861 edition (title slightly changed - "Map of the United States and Mexico, with Canada...") in Karrow. This first edition is not in any references. A later edition, 1859, was issued with geological coloring (HR 13-123). The map case has Stanford's name at the bottom of the spine, indicating that he sold the map (and perhaps printed it as he did the Atlas). See also the 1861 U.S. only edition (#5405) and the full 1869 edition (#5402).

Note 1st edition. 2nd edition was1865, another edition in 1869 (Karrow 1-1683). German edition published in 1864. (Karrow 1-1655). Inset of Central America, text on top of map describing British American Possessions, Time Tables, and U.S. Census for 1860. We can find no earlier edition of this map, so the "Revised Edition" is puzzling. Lubrecht lists three foreign publishers for this map: Bacon in London, Volkmar in Leipsic, and Lubrecht & Co. in Stuttgart. An edition in German is described in Karrow. Later, this map became the more elaborate 1871 "American Union Railroad Map of the United States..." by Hassis & Lubrecht, also published by D.L. The Proposed transcontinental railroad is shown going south of Salt Lake City, Wyoming is still part of Dakota, and a Proposed Southern Pacific Railroad runs from Fort Smith to Sacramento. Note By Joseph Scheda, Engineer of the Geographic Corps, Militarisch Geografischen Institute, Austria. Comprised of 20 sheets, each dissected into 6 sections. Incredible detail throughout the map. A triumph of Austrian/German engraving. The 20 sheets cover most of middle and southern Europe. With an index map titled "Ubersicht zur Zusammenstellung der Blaetter fur die General Karte des oesterreichischen Kaiserstaates." Scheda did a 25 sheet map of Europe. Scheda lived from 1815-1888 (Phillips) and did a Hand Atlas in 1879 with A. Steinhauser (Phillips 6201) which we gather was largely a Physical Atlas. Outline color. Map sheets fold each with a paste down label on the end sheet showing its corresponding portion of the map and roman numeral as shown in the index map. The sheets are then folded into a maroon cloth covered folding board and outer quarter leather maroon cloth slip case 26x21 with "General-Karte Der Oesterreichischen Monarchie von J. Note Composite of all 20 sheets. By Joseph Scheda, Engineer of the Geographic Corps, Militarisch Geografischen Institute, Austria. Scheda" and a decorative design with an illustration of a globe stamped in gilt on the spine.
