This atlas was reissued until 1799 (Phillips), with later issues having a map of the United States. London: Printed For Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, And Brown, Paternoster-Row. 1815.
Note 2nd London edition. The map is the same as the 1st London edition, and is dated 1814. The text corrects many errors of the Philadelphia 1st edition. The map faithfully copies Samuel Lewis' map, except in the area of the "Southern Pass" where the pass itself is not named and the "Liah tan Bands" of Indians are not named. Neele engraved the map. Volumes 22x15 in half-leather and marble paper covered boards with "Lewis & Clark - Travels" and volume number on spine.

Note Lithograph including 3 small views. This is very much in the Andreas Minnesota Atlas style - Warner and Beers in fact collaborated with Andreas and did the coloring on the Minnesota Atlas. This 1876 edition bears little resemblance to the earlier 1871 edition by Warner, Higgins & Beers (see our #3749) which used entirely different maps and had no views. Philadelphia: Published By Bradford And Inskeep, New York. J. Maxwell, Printer. 1814 ... Vol. II.
Note 1st edition. Notwithstanding the title, Nicholas Biddle completed the text after Lewis's suicide. The map and the written account of the expedition changed American mapping of the northwest by giving the first accurate depiction of the relationship of the sources of the Missouri, the sources of the Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains. The map was copied by Samuel Lewis from William Clark's original drawing, and was engraved by Samuel Harrison. The title of the map is "A Map of Lewis and Clark's Track, Across the Western Portion of North America From the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean ..." Maps are without color. Full Title (Title Page to) A new and elegant general atlas, comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty-three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Published by John Conrad & Co., Philadelphia, M. & J. Conrad & Co., Baltimore, Rapin, Conrad & Co., Washington City, Somervell & Conrad, Petersburg, Bonsal, Conrad & Co., Norfolk. 1804.
Note First edition. This atlas was the first collaboration between Aaron Arrowsmith of London and Samuel Lewis of Philadelphia, one of the first such collaborations (and one of the few -- only David Burr and John Arrowsmith, and Henry Rogers and Keith Johnston come to mind). The title page says 63 maps in large type (some issues say 65 maps, all issues show 63 maps in the index). This atlas also accompanies the text volumes of the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Geography published in Philadelphia by Conrad in 1804 (see our #3962). Phillips shows editions of 1804, 1805, 1812, and 1819. Uncolored maps bound into marble paper-covered boards with half leather.

Full Title (Title Page to) A new and elegant general atlas, comprising all the new discoveries, to the present time. Containing sixty-three maps, drawn by Arrowsmith and Lewis. Intended to accompany the new improved edition of Morse's Geography, but equally well calculated to be used with his Gazetteer, or any other geographical work. Boston: Published by Thomas & Andrews. Sold at their bookstore, no. 45, Newbury-Street, and by the principal booksellers in the United States. May, 1812.
Note There are seven new maps not in earlier editions (mostly of South America), and an equal number of the more obscure European maps have been dropped, the remaining maps have not been updated from the 1804 first edition. The oceans are not delineated with dark lines as in the 1804 and 1805 editions. Starting with the 1805 edition, Morse acquired this atlas (originally published in 1804 to accompany the Philadelphia edition of Pinkerton's Geography) for his Geography. Maps without color bound with paper-covered quarter leather boards.

Published by the Andreas Atlas Co., Lakeside Building, Chicago, Ills. Engraved & printed by Chas. Shober & Co., Props. of Chicago Lithographing Co.
Note Illustrated lithographed title page. State Capitol view measures 22 x 28 cm. (inside borders). Ed. with views from the 7th Congressional District. Andreas made 9 separate editions of this atlas, one for each of the 9 Congressional Districts, each district ed. had special views of that district. See the reprint ed. by the Iowa Historical Society for a complete reproduction of all district views, as well as a discussion of the marketing technique in the preface. A second title page precedes the illustrated title page reading "A.T. Andreas' illustrated historical atlas of the State of Iowa. 1875. The Lakeside Press, Clark and Adams Streets, Chicago." Full color, both hand painted and printed. Bound in half leather embossed dark brown cloth covered boards with "Illustrated historical atlas of the State of Iowa 1875." in gilt, title is also blind stamped on the back cover. Full Title (Title Page to) Atlas geografico, estadistico e historico de la Republica Mexicana, formado por Antonio Garcia y Cubas. Mexico. Imprenta de Jose Mariano Fernandez de Lara, calle de la Palma numero 4. 1858.
Note The first great atlas of Mexico, produced by a Mexican and printed in Mexico. Sabin says only 300 copies were printed. The maps are of each province, with each surrounded by text. Phillips lists two later editions of 1886 with somewhat different titles. The only atlas of Mexico listed by Phillips that is earlier than this atlas is Humboldt's Atlas...de la Nouvelle Espagne of 1811. Has two very interesting plates at the end that relate to Aztec writing. Garcia Cubas was 26 when he published this. Strangely, then, the verso of the title page has 1846 as the copyright date (when the author was 14?). Maps hand col. with outline color. Atlas is bound in quarter leather brown marbled paper covered boards with title embossed in gold on the spine reading "Garcia y Cubas. Atlas geografico de la Republica Mexicana."

Met Privilelgie der Heeren Staaten van Holland en West-Vriesland.
Note This is a later edition of DeLisle's maps, including some maps by Sanson, Jaillot and others, first published by Covens and Mortier in 1730. It is bound with a geography text by Sanson. This issue did not included the abbreviated edition of Popple's map that appears in the P596 copy and the index does not call for it. The maps are beautifully done, following the original DeLisle plates closely. This copy does not have the plan of Carthagene called for in the index, and it does not appear to have been bound in originally (there is a ms line drawn through the index line referring to this map that may have been done at the time of issue). Koeman's C&M 6 is slightly different from our copy: it has 1733 on the title page and 1741 on the index (our copy has 1742 on the index and no date on the title page, also, C&M 6 lists 107 maps on the index - this one lists 108 maps with one crossed out (see above) - that map crossed out was published in 1741 or 42 and probably was not yet ready for inclusion. So our copy was unknown to Koeman or Phillips. Atlas is bound in half leather marbled paper covered boards with "DeLisle Atlas" stamped in gilt on the new spine. Maps are hand painted with outline color. The printed title page is in red and black with an engraved illustration.

Full Title (Title Page to) The American Military Pocket Atlas, Being An approved Collection of Correct Maps, Both General and Particular, of The British Colonies, Especially those which now are, or probably may be The Theatre of War: Taken principally from the actual Surveys and judicious Observations of Engineers De Brahm and Romans, Cook, Jackson, and Collet, Maj. Holland, and other Officers, Employed in His Majesty's Fleets and Armies. London. Printed for R. Sayer and J. Bennet, Map and Print-Sellers (No. 53) Fleet-street.
Note This small hand atlas has six early maps, three of which are particularly important to the mapping of the American Revolution: The Seat of War in the Northern Colonies and The seat of War in the Middle British Colonies (both derived from the Evans/Pownall maps), and the Seat of War in the Southern Colonies (by Bernard Romans). Nicknamed the "Holster Atlas" because it was made for the used of British army officers. All maps in outline color, folded and bound into book with paper covered boards and quarter leather with "American Pocket Atlas" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Made Under the Direction of the Secretary of War, In 1853-56, According to Acts of Congress of March 3, 1853, May 31, 1854, and August 5, 1854. Volume XI. Washington: George W. Bowman, Printer. 1861. 36th Congress, 2d Session, Senate, Ex. Doc.
Note This Quarto issue of the report is the House issue, except for volume XI which is the Senate issue. W. Heckrotte has an unusual copy of the Warren U.S. map found in this report. It is dissected on linen and is an earlier version of the map published with the Quarto report. It has 40 authorities vs. 42 in the quarto issue map, shorter note to left of authorities, lots of plate differences, especially: nothing in Owyhee area, differences in N.M., Calif., etc. Looks like someone asked for the map before it was finished -see the Lack of ocean lines in the top half south of Gray's Harbor. In 13 volumes. Bound in full leather with "Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad to the Pacific Ocean" and the volume number on the spine in gold.

World Atlas
Authors Garnier, F. A., 1803-1863
MDCCCLXII.
Note This atlas is exceptional for its "spheroidal" maps of the globe, showing the various continents and poles, shaded to give the effect of a sphere floating in space. The remaining maps are also very well executed and colored, mostly by hand, a few in colored litho. In recent years, this atlas has become rare in the trade. This is the only atlas that Garnier produced, according to Phillips. Tooley lists an 1860 edition. Covers are quarter leather marbled paper covered boards with a paper label, the burgundy leather spine is embossed with "F.A. Garnier. Atlas Universel et Spheroidal de Geographie" in gilt. On verso of half-title: Paris -- Imprimerie de P.-A. Bourdier et Cie., Rue Mazarine, 30.
