Description:
This is the second scene in the chronological story of John the Baptist, but the scenes were not painted in order, and this was painted well into the project. In the Gospel of Luke, John is a familial relative of Jesus whose birth was foretold by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, who then traveled to see Elizabeth, his mother. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!" (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
