Description:
Found in Otricoli ca. 1781-1782 and restored by Giovanni Pierantoni, who added the bust, neck and back of the head. Originally it must have been part of the colossal cult statue of Jupiter seated on a throne that stood in the Capitolium of the Roman colony Ocriculum. It was probably inspired by the statue in the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill, Rome, made by the Athenian sculptor Apollonius after the fire in 83 BCE. Apollonius of Athens was a late Hellenistic period copyist, appropriating classical Greek works for the Romans. It is after a Greek original of the 4th century BCE.
