Description:
The panel was probably part of a diptych or triptych for private devotion. The reverse side was also prepared with gesso, probably to be painted, so that the piece would be viewed on both sides. The moment portrayed is from John (18:33-35) when Pilate asks Christ, "Art thou the King of the Jews?" Restored in 1981. (Source: The Vatican Collections: The Papacy and Art, New York: H.N.
