Giovanni’s first major independent commission is likely to have been the St. Vincent Ferrer polyptych (ca. 1464-1468; Venice, SS Giovanni e Paolo). By the beginning of the 1470s he must have been regarded as the city’s leading painter of altarpieces and smaller devotional works. There are nine panels in the work, including three predella panels.
