The statue is documented and dated 1457 on its wooden base. Although Donatello was 70 years old and in ill health, he made substantial purchases of materials for casting bronze statuary, one example of which was the impassioned figure of St. John the Baptist for a chapel in Siena Cathedral (in situ). The Chapel of Saint John the Baptist is situated in the left transept and also contains frescoes by Pinturicchio. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
