Description:

Sixty-seven works by Bella are visible at the Pinacoteca Querini Stampalla in Venice. They all depict everyday life in the Serenissima (the Republic of Venice); some illustrate historic events of the 16th century, some are 18th century views. These fill the walls of the gallery in three tiers. Bella was classed as an artisan rather than artist, becoming a member of the painters’ confraternity only in 1760. He took sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century engravings as his starting point, adapting them with his own personal experience. The Capitano Generale da Mar was the highest position in terms of the maritime concerns of Venice and could be held only by a Venetian patrician. In Bella's day the position no longer existed and he consulted a 1610 engraving, Giacomo Franco’s Habiti d’Huomeni e Donne Venetiane.
