Description:
On the left St. Peter Martyr is represented. This is a favorite theme, here simplified. The composition of this fresco is severe in the extreme. The Virgin inhabits not a house but a cell as Spartan as that in which the fresco is painted. As early as the 13th century the Constitution of the Order of Preachers stipulated that dormitories were to be decorated with an image of the Virgin in the corridor and that the cells were to contain images of Christ or the Virgin. The frescoes wholly or almost wholly painted by Fra Angelico are those in cells 3, 6, 7, 9 and 10. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
