Description:
In addition to frescoing the walls of the Sassetti Chapel in Santa Trìnita, he was commissioned to execute the altarpiece of the Adoration of the Shepherds, with its prominent Classical sarcophagus and triumphal arch. Its iconography was probably devised by the humanist Bartolomeo della Fonte (1445-1513). The Adoration is entirely autograph and shows Domenico’s characteristic skill in synthesizing many sources of inspiration, including Classical sculpture, the monumental frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and Flemish painting: the figures of the shepherds reflect the influence of Hugo van der Goes’s Portinari Altarpiece which had arrived in Florence in 1483.
