Description:
|
The name is an attribution to an anonymous Italian painter or a group of painters that may include Jacopino di Francesco Bavosi, his son, and other artists. This altarpiece (from Santa Maria Nuova, Bologna) dates from the later phase of the assigned date range and shows few Riminese traits and may be by a different hand from the earlier group. The scene of Christ among the Doctors (left of the center panel) includes large numbers of texts and shows violent discussion in which some of the elders fling down their books in disgust. The composition is reminiscent both of local university debates and of Bolognese manuscript illumination. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
