Description:
Santa Pudenziana (ca. 390), was converted from a Roman domus ecclesiae, which also incorporated part of a 2nd century Roman bath. During the reigns of Diocletian and Constantine the style of wall paintings and mosaics assumed a severe, monumental linearity related to that of official art of the Tetrarchy. However in the early 5th century this was characteristically tempered by a fresh classicizing impulse, as in the apse mosaic of Santa Pudenziana. Kleinbauer dated them possibly between 385 and 417; the range corresponding to the pontificate of Innocent I (401-17) is generally used. The apostles wear senatorial togas. The architecture depicted has been interpreted as either the heavenly Jerusalem or churches built by Constantine. The mosaics were heavily restored and some areas removed during the 16th century.
