Berninghaus was a founding member (1915) of the Taos Society of Artists. He is best known for his paintings of Native Americans, New Mexico and the American Southwest. His son, Charles Berninghaus (1905-1988), was also a Taos artist. He was born and spent much of his career in St. Louis, traveling to Taos in the summers. In 1925 he finally relocated to Taos.
