Caravaggio effected in the Magdalene a radically prophetic decontextualization, at once modernizing (as seen in the tiled floor and the girl’s dress) and universalizing. The setting of a dim, bare chamber punctuated by light from an external source became the preferred existential space of his mature art (later done with greater contrast than seen here.)
