Description:
In the early 1950s Chagall experimented with painted ceramics, to which he applied his familiar motifs. (In this work, the rooster). During a decade he produced 220 ceramic works. In Chagall's "vase-sculptures", the handles and feet of the ceramics become arms, busts, legs and wings, accentuating their anthropomorphic or zoomorphic character. Protuberances with cavities animate the pieces. (Source: Chagall Museum [website]; http://en.musees-nationaux-alpesmaritimes.fr/chagall/)
