In the early 1950s Chagall experimented with painted ceramics, to which he applied his familiar motifs. (In this work, the village, goat and floating woman). During a decade he produced 220 ceramic works. In Chagall's "vase-sculptures", the handles and feet of the ceramics become arms, busts, legs and wings, accentuating their anthropomorphic or zoomorphic character.
