Chagall painted this scene many times, here in its most restricted form with a compact narrative. Moses, on the right, falls on his knees before the bush that burns and is not consumed. The divine mission, to bring the Hebrews out of Egypt, is announced to him by an angel floating in the middle of a colored circle, evocative at the same time of the mandorla found in Romanesque pediments mingled with memories of Orphism from Delaunay. On the left, the scene of the crossing of the Red Sea presents Moses followed by the Jewish people in a tight row in his cloak. This echoes the sheltering of people under the robes of Mary in depictions of the Virgin of Mercy (Madonna della Misericordia).
