Description:
During his last 30 years Chagall mastered stained glass, for which he adapted ancient techniques of hand-painting on the glass before firing, and with which he depicted both religious and secular subjects. He provided windows at the cathedral of Metz (first window, 1960); this is one panel of the Metz windows (in the ambulatory). The intensities of color that he achieved with the technical support of the stained-glass artist Charles Marq enriched his work in other media. The theme is Jacob's dream of a ladder with angels ascending and descending. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
