Description:
|
Chagall took French citizenship in 1937, but, with his wife Bella, he was forced to seek asylum in the USA in 1941 after he had been briefly imprisoned under the Vichy government in Marseille. This period in the USA (from 1941 to 1948) was marked by the sudden death of his wife from a viral infection in 1944. This painting was completed after her death.
