Description:
|
From the exhbition Chagall: Colour and Music (Exhibition, January 28 to June 11, 2017); from a private collection. Preparatory sketch for the illustration of La Fontaine's Fables. Chagall and his family moved to Paris in 1923 on the advice of Blaise Cendrars, who had informed Chagall that Ambroise Vollard wanted to commission him to make book illustrations. Chagall extended his range with 100 etchings for La Fontaine’s Fables (printed 1928-1931; 2 vols, pubd by Tériade, Paris, 1952); here the black and white is based on preliminary works in gouache, and the marks are of an extraordinary freedom.
