Description:
James Bard was a prolific American painter of ships. Although both the building and the ship are exquisitely detailed, the way the building is set on the bluff above the river is awkward in its perspective, which relates this to naive (self-taught) art. The Daniel Drew was a Hudson River steamboat built in 1861, named after its owner, a major financier. Visible in the background is the Prospect Park Hotel, which was located at Catskill, New York. At the time this painting was made the boat was no longer owned by Drew, who died bankrupt. (Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Main_Page)
