Description:
Part of Exhibit "Marsden Hartley's Maine," July 8-November 12, 2017, from a private collection. Hartley composed this painting from sketches made on site. While most of his figures confront the viewer directly, the bathers here seem unaware of being watched. Hartley's disregard for consistent and naturalistic proportions highlights his desire to paint seemingly like an untrained artist.
