Description:
Jazz (a commission in 1942 for an illustrated album in color), was Matisse’s first major project using the cutout paper technique. Instead of using cutout paper simply as a preparatory study aid, as he had earlier done, Matisse decided to base stencils (pochoir) for prints directly on such designs. The 20 plates, are supplemented by 70 pages of handwritten text. It was published as a limited edition (250 copies) art book in 1947 by art publisher Tériade. Matisse cut sheets of paper which had been hand-painted in gouache in custom colors, then Edmond Vairel created the stencils, which were printed using gouache on Arches paper.
